Topical StampWhys from Greece

The curious carved objects on this Greek issue are:

a) walking sticks
b) rustic flutes
c) knitting needle holders
d) wooden fans

Lay claim to the Golden Fleece for future knitting projects if you answered (c).

In 1966, Greece, well known for stamps honoring its classical heritage,  issued a set of stamps (Scott 856-864) recognizing the importance of the humbler arts, such handicrafts as embroidery, jewelry making, and wood carving. Like miniature totems, these knitting needle cases  reflect ancient mythological themes as well as images drawn from village life.
